This AVP timing cover is built as a new casting to the same basic design and fitment as the updated Ford 8C3Z‑6019‑D front cover, so functionally it’s very similar to a current OEM replacement rather than a radically redesigned piece. It isn’t a patched or welded core; you’re starting over with fresh aluminum and sealing surfaces, which eliminates any pre‑existing erosion or porosity issues from the old cover.
Where most 6.4L front covers fail, though, is less about a “bad” casting and more about long‑term coolant erosion and debris. Casting sand, corrosion, and scale circulate in the cooling system and effectively sandblast the aluminum behind the water pump until it pits and breaks through, sending even more metal into the coolant and oiling system. Because of that, simply installing a new cover—OEM or AVP—doesn’t address the root cause by itself.
That’s why it’s important to strongly recommend a coolant filtration kit. A good filter setup will continuously trap casting sand, rust, and gasket debris before they can attack the new cover, EGR cooler, oil cooler, and radiator, and it helps keep the coolant cleaner and more stable over time.
